News from Sustainable Harwell and some dates for your diary
Three dates for your diary:
Saving money with home Energy Efficiency
On Monday 26th Oct we will be running a clinic at Harwell Village Hall to help people consider how to cut energy bills through energy efficiency upgrades to their homes. The clinic will be based around the use of Homewise a new App developed by the Energy Savings Trust and sponsored by Oxford County Council.
The clinic will run from 7-9 pm in the Committee Room. If you would like to come along for an informal chat and learn more about what might be possible in your home, drop us line at sustainable@harwellvillage.uk, just to let us know you are coming.
Meeting and AGM
On Weds 4th Nov we will be holding our AGM, again at the Village Hall starting at 7:30 pm. We will be reviewing the Group’s activities over the last year as well as electing Group Officers and reviewing our accounts. We also plan to take the wraps off some new initiatives to help address the climate and nature crises, so do come along and help shape the Group’s focus in the future. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you then.
Holloway Hedgerow – Next Planting, Sat 5th Dec
Phase 3 of the Holloway Hedgerow project to plant another 120m along this ancient village bridleway is nearly upon us. This time we have decided to plant the young whips before Xmas in order to give them as much time as possible to root in and establish, particularly if the current drought continues to haunt us in the growing season next year.
We have again been fortunate to obtain more whips from CPRE Hedgerow Heroes via their partner Wildlife Oxfordshire A big thanks to them for their ongoing support for this village project. We are hopeful that as many volunteers as possible will help out on the 5th, many hands make light work! If you would like to give us a hand please note Sat 5th Dec in your diary and we will send out more details nearer the time.
People’s Emergency Briefing
On Friday 25th September over 70 people came along to the Village Hall to attend a special screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing.
This eye-opening film brings together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence about climate change and nature loss and why they matter for things like:
🌧️ Extreme weather
🍞 Food security
🏥 Health
💷 Cost of living
The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and a range of voices from across the UK.
Parish and District Councillors, together with members of the public and quite a few members of Sustainable Harwell, came along to watch the film and join in with the discussion about our future, what it means for our community and what we can do to improve things.
If you missed the Harwell showing but would like to see the film, it’s being shown on a variety of future dates at many places locally, including Didcot, Wantage, Blewbury, Sutton Courtenay and Letcome Regis.
Just visit the Screening Map here to see dates and obtain tickets for a screening nearby.
Note: the film is only being shown at in-person screenings and is not available online.
Best wishes
