Holloway Hedgerow – 9th January 2027
We have had a rethink about planting another stretch of whips at the Holloway as the ones we planted in January this year haven’t done as well as we hoped. It looks like there was some new growth but then the drought set in. We will know more in the spring but we’re hoping that the roots have survived and the plants will grow back from soil level. So, having taken some external advice from the whip suppliers, we think the best use of our time would be to attend to the existing whips to try and reinvigorate growth, rather than plant new ones. This would involve weeding inside the protective guards and cutting back the whips to just a few centimetres and ensuring the guards and canes are in the right position.
We had originally decided on early December to plant the next lot of whips but as we have decided against this, we think we should do the maintenance in January, during the dormant period.
We’re suggesting 9th January as a working party day. As always volunteers are very welcome, even for just a few hours. If you are interested in coming along please contact Penny Kinloch or Sustainable Harwell and we will organise things.
