Planting weekend – Saturday 2nd April (photos)
we have another planting session for the Orchard planned this weekend.
The first session will be Saturday 2nd April from 14.00 –16.00 approximately. There might be a second session the next day on Sunday 14.00-16.00 depending on how much planting we achieve on Saturday.
We have prepared the ground and are ready to plant. The turf has been removed and the soil has been broken up. The whips have been sorted into bundles to be planted in 10 metre sections (I think) so it will be easy to plant them spaced out appropriately. We will plant two or three of the same species together. The soil is still quite lumpy but I think we should be able to plant reasonably easily. We have already planted several metres successfully.
Please come to the Rec prepared to get a bit muddy and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring sturdy shoes and warm clothes, gloves and a large fork or spade, small fork and trowel, or anything else you think suitable. If anyone has a bulb planting device then please bring that as that might come in handy. There are two types of whips: some whips are in little plugs of soil (like the ones we planted at the school and Winnaway) so we will have to make a small hole to plant them in; the second type has longer roots so will need a deeper hole.
Refreshments will be available at the Harwellian which will be most welcome.
You will need to sign in just to let us know who has attended. A risk assessment has been done and we will be spaced out safely.
