Because of Tier 4 rules, planting of the remaining 40 whips is postponed.
We are planting tree whips at Harwell School.
We had two productive days on 19th and 20th Dec and finished planting the area behind the swimming pool and along the fence. We also cleared brambles in that area. We had another working party in the wild area at the western edge of the school. The trees are being strangled by the ivy so our team tackled this big task with gusto. This is where the next delivery of whips will be planted in March so it was great to make a start on this area.
We have about 40 whips left to plant. Plans to do this in December are postponed, and we will let you know as soon as it becomes possible again.
Here are pictures from the weekend of planting. After that are practical details of what is involved if you are able to help with planting the remaining whips.
Below are plans of where to plant and how to arrange the whips. We are planting in two separate locations – along the fence at the top of the car park and along the right hand fence. There is plenty of room to spread out. More whips are coming in March so we will plant them in different areas then.
We would ideally plant in a double row as shown on the bottom half of the School Hedge Planting plan. Nothing is set in stone so if anyone has a different view or plan that is fine. The indicative line is about 14 metres long with about 70 plants & follows Woodland Trust advice for planting.
We will be adhering to Covid rules as per guidelines and we have a risk assessment (see attached) and insurance in place. We have a QR code to scan in on your phone but if you can’t do that we can take down your details for Track and Trace.
Wear sturdy out door clothing suitable for wet/cold/muddy conditions. Bring your own sanitiser, gloves, spade, fork, trowel and secateurs (we could do some tidying up if we have time to spare), and any refreshments you may need. There won’t be any facilities at the school.
For non-local helpers the address is: Harwell Primary School, The Styles, OX11 0HX. You need to approach the school from the High Street via Gaveston Road. Sat nav might take you to a different entrance which is locked, so be sure to go to th e school this way. Parking – if you need to park we can use the school car park but it’s preferable for local people to walk, please.
Thank you to those who have volunteered, please can you say when you would like to help out. We suggest slots of 2 hours. We’re not sure how long it will take us to plant the whips so we will probably need more people on the Sunday, and also on 28th-30th December.
We will start around 10.30 and plant till about 16.00.
If anyone feels they have a bit of time to help please send an email to sustainable@harwellvillage.uk and we will be in touch to discuss when it would be convenient for you.
